How many pendants over a kitchen island?

Two pendants suit an island up to about 7 feet long, three up to about 10 feet. Hang them 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, space them 24 to 30 inches apart centre to centre, and keep the outer pendants at least 6 inches inside the island’s ends.

Odd numbers read as deliberate and even numbers read as orderly; neither is wrong. What does go wrong is crowding — three pendants on a 5-foot island leaves no counter you can actually see past. If the arithmetic is tight, drop to two larger fixtures.

Spacing and placement

  • Space pendants 24 to 30 in apart, measured centre to centre.
  • Keep the outermost pendants at least 6 in inside the ends of the island — visually they should sit within the worktop, not float past it.
  • Centre the group on the island’s length, then centre it again on the island’s depth. An island pushed against a run of cabinets still gets its lights on the island’s own centre line.
  • Total pendant width across the group should stay under about two-thirds of the island length.

Hanging height over a worktop

Thirty to thirty-six inches above the countertop, to the lowest point of the pendant. That clears sightlines across the island for anyone standing at it, and keeps the light on the work surface rather than in the eyes of whoever is sitting opposite.

  • Standard 36-inch counter, 8 ft ceiling: 30–32 in above the worktop puts the pendant bottom around 66–68 in off the floor.
  • Taller ceilings: add roughly 3 in per extra foot, to a practical limit of about 40 in.
  • If anyone in the household is over 6 ft, stand them at the island before fixing the drop.

An island is a work surface first

  • Aim for 3000K here rather than the 2700K used in living rooms — slightly crisper light suits a surface people chop on, without going cold.
  • CRI 90+ matters more in a kitchen than anywhere else in the house. Raw meat and fresh produce are judged by colour.
  • Open-bottomed shades throw light down onto the counter. Fully enclosed globes look softer and light the room instead — decide which job the pendants are doing.
  • Put them on a dimmer anyway. The island is a homework desk and a bar as often as it is a chopping board.

Common questions

How many pendant lights over a 6 foot island?

Two, each 12 to 16 inches in diameter, spaced 24 to 30 inches apart and centred on the island with at least 6 inches clear at each end.

How high should pendants hang over a kitchen island?

30 to 36 inches above the countertop, measured to the lowest point of the pendant. On a standard 36-inch counter that puts the bottom of the pendant roughly 66 to 72 inches off the floor.

How far apart should island pendants be?

24 to 30 inches centre to centre. The whole group should span no more than about two-thirds of the island’s length, with the outer pendants sitting at least 6 inches inside its ends.

Should island pendants be odd or even in number?

Either works. Fit decides it: two pendants suit islands up to about 7 feet, three up to about 10. Choose the count that keeps 24 to 30 inches between them rather than the count that follows a rule.
